Here's what the view at the entrance of the park looks like:
Living "inner city" in Calgary doesn't mean you're confined to a concrete jungle. Despite being only a 20-minute bike ride from downtown's village of skyscrapers, the east entrance to Bowmont Park is literally a 1-minute walk from my house. The air, previously contaminated by the BC forest fires, cleared by yesterday evening, so I decided to go see the progress they're making on the new area of the park, and simply to stretch my legs and lungs after a day indoors. Here's what the view at the entrance of the park looks like: For a little while now, the park has been undergoing a significant makeover. A huge area next to the current park was a quarry, but since the mining finished, the city has envisioned remodling this area to host interpretive nature walks. Here are a few shots of some of the walkways and construction they've done so far: Calgary boasts a wide variety of parks (including Fish Creek Provincial Park) that showcase waterways, gardens, prairie, hills, evergreen forests, and other amazing geological and biological features. Here, it was lovely to see so many wildflowers in full bloom, as well as a variety of trees and bushes. When we moved from our apartment just south of the downtown, one of my priorities became looking for a place that was still close to the river. I love the peaceful sounds the river makes and the fact that it's a gathering point for people and animals alike. It was fun to see what kinds of activities others were doing in the park, from visiting to mountain biking to berry-picking. As a kid, I loved simply exploring Calgary's parks on foot, imagining things as they might have been before the mission-fort-town started developing. In fact, from certain angles, you can often feel as if you've been transported back in time.
