Professional Interests
I'd like to better understand and advocate for the role of public education in enhancing liberal democracy, especially within a cultural context of consumerism, commercialism, and competition. I consider teaching and learning to be an ethnocentric act, and seek to recognize and challenge the biases therein, particularly especially as it relates to the integration of indigenous approaches and worldviews. I seek to enhance the learning environment through design by considering aesthetics, physical/cognitive ergonomics, and creating more immersive experiences. I'm interested in the role of religion and spiritual development in education, especially as it relates to ethics and resilience. I enjoy examining the influence of technology on pedagogy and learning, and the evolution of literacy in response to changes in technology; specifically, comics (as defined by Scott McCloud), e-literature, multimodal texts (and relationships among aural, print, and visual representation), critical literacy, and information management. As lenses through which to understand texts, I find I'm drawn to reader response and Marxist theories.
