Spanish Curriculum Resources
This page contains links to resources that guide Spanish Language & Culture instruction and assessment Alberta, as well as my go-to supplementary resources for planning and implementation.
Primary ResourcesSpanish Language & Culture Programs of Studies
My students' first exposure to Spanish happens in grade 7, so I refer to the SLC 6-year program for Grades 7-9 along with the Guide to Implementation for the 9-year program. When students enter high school, they normally jump straight into Spanish 20 in the SLC 3-year program for Spanish 10-30. For this, I have used pre-built ADLC (Alberta Distance Learning Centre) courses and consult the corresponding Guide to Implementation. Authorized Resource List & Annotated Bibliography This is a handy list of previewed and approved materials that align with the various programs of study. I have used Buen Viaje and, while the resource is very comprehensive, I found the sequencing of grammar and vocabulary awkward in relation to both the program of studies and to other Spanish language learning resources. |
Supplementary ResourcesWordreference.com This site has Spanish-English and Spanish-Spanish dictionaries, tools, and forums dedicated to understanding Spanish language use (among other languages). It is my go-to resource for translation and comprehension, and I continue to find it as a recommended resource at the university level. SpanishDict Similar to Wordreference.com, this site provides access to dictionaries, translators, conjugators, and language forums, but it is dedicated to Spanish. It also provides both articles and interactive quizzes on Grammar, but discusses topics in a slightly different way. It also contains interactive flash cards to help students practice their vocabulary. English Grammar for Students of Spanish Emily Spinelli's book has to be one of the clearest and most concise teaching tools for Spanish grammar I have ever come across. I wish I'd known about it as a student, and am grateful to have it as a teacher. Libro digital Herramientas de español (Online Advanced Spanish Book) Enrique Yepes has produced a comprehensive site that includes instruction and interactive practice for any Spanish grammar. He also links to many other top-notch sites for explanations and practice exercises. It is excellent. Study Spanish.com This site is good for supplementary or even primary instructional material with options for practice or to set up one's assessments using the resources here. I've found it most useful for pronunciation and grammar, but there is also some cultural information (scaffolded readings with audio) from which to draw. Señor Jordan Jeremy Jordan's videos and handouts with colour-coding and step-by-step instructions are significant helps for students. TodoELE.net This site is basically a PLN with resources and activities for Spanish teachers. I love that you can filter activity searches by grammar, function, and culture. Centro Virtual Cervantes - Ensenanza This landing page contains resources developed and promoted by the CVC (the authority in Spanish language and culture promotion), including DidactiRed, Aula Virtual de Español (AVE), and Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE). |
