Literary CommunityCalgary proudly hosts many wonderful music festivals, spoken word events, writers-in-residence, and other fantastic writers and performers. It's important that ELA teachers take advantage of these opportunities to extend the literary practices in their classrooms in the community.
Calgary Public Library The public library is now free and has a ton of hard copy and digital resources, as well as programs for teens and kids. University of Calgary Distinguished Writer's Program This site contains information about the program, about the current writer-in-residence, and about the Distinguished Visiting Writer. Wordfest WordFest hosts year-round literary events in Calgary, Banff and Bow Valley featuring the world’s best writers, and supports vibrant and healthy communities by providing accessible and engaging programming that shares the power of story. Calgary Folk Music Festival The annual Festival is a four-day family-friendly cultural and musical jamboree at the bucolic Prince's Island Park that celebrates over 70 artists from Alberta, Canada and the world. They also host a song-writing contest early each year. Marda Loop Justice Film Festival A documentary film festival and a hub of global citizen engagement promoting understanding of justice issues and advocating for the wellbeing of local and global neighbours. |
